History & Military Use
The tactical tomahawk is a modern revival of one of the oldest weapons in North American warfare. Originally used by Native American warriors and adopted by frontier soldiers and rangers during the colonial period, the tomahawk fell out of standard military use as firearms matured. It made a dramatic comeback during the Vietnam War, when US Army Special Forces soldiers rediscovered its utility for jungle combat, breaching, and general field use. Today, the tactical tomahawk is carried by US Army Rangers, Special Forces, and Marine Raiders as a breaching tool, close-quarters weapon, and multipurpose field implement. Companies like American Tomahawk Company supply modern variants directly to special operations units, where it has become a symbol of elite infantry culture.
