History & Military Use

The STANAG (Standardization Agreement) magazine was developed as part of NATO's effort to standardize small arms ammunition and feeding systems across member nations. Designed to fit the M16, M4, and other 5.56×45mm NATO rifles, the 30-round STANAG magazine became the dominant infantry magazine from the 1970s onward. Adopted by dozens of NATO and partner-nation militaries, it has seen action in every major conflict from Vietnam through the War on Terror. Its double-stack, single-feed design and polymer or aluminum construction have been widely copied, and today it remains the world's most common rifle magazine format.
