History & Military Use
Developed by Motorola and adopted by the US Army in 1941, the SCR-536 was the first truly portable handheld radio transceiver issued to combat troops. Operating on AM frequencies, it gave squad leaders and forward observers the ability to communicate across short distances without being tethered to a field telephone. Used extensively across all theaters of World War II and into the Korean War, the SCR-536 became a symbol of the communications revolution in modern warfare. It is among the most recognizable and historically significant radios ever fielded.
