History & Military Use

The Mk. 2 fragmentation grenade — universally nicknamed the "Pineapple" for its segmented cast iron body — was the standard US military hand grenade from 1918 through the Korean War era. Developed as an improvement over the earlier Mk. 1, the Mk. 2 was issued to US Army and Marine Corps forces throughout World War II, seeing action in every theater from North Africa and Europe to the Pacific islands. Approximately 50 million were produced during WWII alone. The segmented body was originally believed to improve fragmentation, though later analysis showed the fragments were irregular — leading to its eventual replacement by the M26. Nevertheless, the Mk. 2 remains one of the most recognizable military icons of the 20th century.
