History & Military Use

The M84 stun grenade, commonly known as a "flashbang," was developed in the 1970s to give law enforcement and military units a non-lethal tool for disorienting and incapacitating subjects during room entry and hostage rescue operations. On detonation, the M84 produces an intense burst of light — approximately 1 million candela — and a deafening 170–180 decibel bang that temporarily blinds and disorients anyone in its immediate vicinity. First adopted by US Special Operations units and later standardized across law enforcement SWAT teams, the flashbang became a defining tool of modern hostage rescue, pioneered by units such as the British SAS, German GSG-9, and US Delta Force. The M84 remains in service with US military and law enforcement today.
