History & Military Use

The M240 is a gas-operated, belt-fed 7.62×51mm NATO machine gun that has served as the US military's primary medium machine gun since replacing the M60 in the 1990s. Based on the Belgian FN MAG design, the M240 was first adopted by the US Army and Marine Corps as a coaxial vehicle-mounted weapon before being adapted for infantry use as the M240B. Known for its exceptional reliability in harsh conditions, the M240B has seen combat in every major US operation from Somalia and the Balkans through Iraq and Afghanistan. It is carried by the machine gunner at the squad level, providing sustained suppressive fire at ranges up to 1,800 meters.
