History & Military Use

The collapsible or expandable baton — commonly known as the ASP baton after one of its most popular manufacturers — emerged as a law enforcement tool in the 1990s as departments sought a less-lethal, compact alternative to the traditional straight stick. When retracted, the baton collapses to a concealable length; a sharp flick of the wrist extends and locks the steel segments into a rigid striking implement. The "Peacekeeper" RCC (Rapid Control Compliance) designation reflects the design philosophy of providing officers a proportional force tool for crowd control, suspect compliance, and personal defense without resorting to lethal force. Tactical batons are now standard issue for police, corrections officers, and security personnel worldwide.
