History & Military Use

The ALICE SAW pouch was developed alongside the adoption of the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in US service during the 1980s. Designed to carry the 200-round soft-pack or hard drum magazine for the M249, it allowed automatic riflemen to carry ready ammunition on their person as part of the standard ALICE load-bearing kit. Saw extensive use through the Gulf War, Somalia, and into the early GWOT before the transition to MOLLE-based systems.
