Backstory / History

The ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) system was the standard US military load-bearing equipment from the mid-1970s through the early 2000s, replacing the earlier M1956 and M1967 LINCLOE systems. The radio backpack variant was carried by RTOs — Radio Telephone Operators — the critical communications link between the infantry squad and the wider command structure. RTOs were essential in every conflict from Vietnam through the Gulf War and early GWOT operations, carrying the AN/PRC-77 or SINCGARS radio that kept the unit connected to fire support, medevac, and command.
